Frequently Asked Questions

  • What areas do you cover?

I teach group hypnobirthing classes in Hale, and for my private 1:1 sessions I teach hypnobirthing classes in South Manchester (Chorlton, Didsbury), Trafford (Old Trafford, Stretford, Sale, Timperley), Stockport (Cheadle) and Cheshire (Hale, Altrincham, Bowdon). If you are thinking of booking a private class, contact me to discuss whether I cover your area.

  • What makes your classes different to other antenatal classes?

I am a qualified and experienced practising midwife, which gives me a unique insight into maternity services, and knowledge on how to navigate the system. It also means I am always up-to-date, so my classes are evidence based, and I have good knowledge of local systems and guidance.

My classes are positive and empowering, to help you look forward to your birth, but as a delivery suite midwife I am in a position to ensure that you also have realistic, and non-judgemental information so that you are truly prepared for birth.

The Little Birth Company courses, materials, and MP3s I use for teaching were written by a midwife and a hypnotherapist and are the best I have come across.

To get to know me a bit better, why not follow me on social media (links below), or arrange a chat on the phone?

  • Are your birth preparation classes hypnobirthing classes?

Yes! But they are so much more than 'just' hypnobirthing. You will also learn about the basic physiology of birth, how to promote the production of your birthing hormones, what happens when you might need a helping hand (induction of labour/assisted birth/caesarean birth), all the different pain relief options available to you, and positions to help you birth your baby more easily and comfortably.

  • I'm not sure about hypnobirthing... isn't it a bit 'hippy-ish?!'

Hypnobirthing is simply a method to help you stay as calm and relaxed as possible. There is nothing 'out there' about learning to breath in a way that releases tension and allows your birth hormones to flow.

The knowledge you will build in my classes is how you become empowered to make decisions that are right for you and how you begin to feel confident about birth. The hypnosis side of hypnobirthing is simply another method of helping you to see birth as a positive experience, which helps reduce fear, and therefore tension, and therefore pain.

You might be able to use the techniques to stay so calm and relaxed that you don't require any extra pain relief, or you might use the techniques to manage until you can have the epidural you are certain you want. You might hypnobirth in a birth pool at home, or you might hypnobirth on the ward whilst your labour is induced.

  • Is hypnobirthing free on the NHS?

Unfortunately, hypnobirthing is not available on the NHS in Manchester.

  • Are your classes just for first-time parents?

No! You may have had a difficult birth previously and this time you want to prepare differently, you may have attended a hypnobirthing course previously and now you just want a refresher, or maybe this time you're having a caesarean and would like to attend my caesarean birth preparation course.

If you want to chat more about your previous experience and why you are considering a course with me this time, get in touch!

  • Are your classes just for me or should I bring my partner?

The person who is going to support you in labour, i.e. your birth partner, is the best person to attend my classes with, this could be your partner, your mum, your sister, or a friend. They will learn how to support you, practically and emotionally, including tips to keep you calm and relaxed.

You are more than welcome to attend my classes by yourself though. You could ask your birth partner to read the material I provide you with, or you might just want to attend to prepare and empower yourself.
